Model United Nations Program

What is MUN?

The MUN is a meeting of students from around the world, recognized by the United Nations. The students meet, as do the United Nations, in representation of a country and are expected to defend that country’s policies while speaking, discussing and debating about current peacekeeping issues.

Where and when does it take place?

The largest meeting (THIMUN – The Hague International Model United Nations) takes place in The Hague, Netherlands. The conference lasts one week and usually takes place during the last week of January. Registration deadlines and first payments are due in early September.

Who participates?

Any student in grades 9-12 can go to the MUN. However, students must be in good academic standing, (no D’s or F’s) be anxious to work hard and to meet lots of people from all around the world!!! (about 3,500 total)

What criteria are used for selection?

Students will be given a project to do over the summer. In September, this work along with each student’s grade level, GPA, UN test results, formal speech before a panel, punctuality and meeting of deadlines will be combined to make a final selection.

How much does it cost?

The approximate cost of the whole trip is around 1,300 Euros. This includes flight, lodging, registration fee and lunch.

What skills will be learned?

Students will practice public speaking, debating and parliamentary procedure. They will learn how the UN functions as well as its limitations. Independent research is essential in order to learn, generally, about all current issues on this year’s agenda. Each student will specialize on one particular topic. (environment, defense, disarmament, human rights, health international security, finance, decolonization, administration, legal) Finally, students will formulate formal resolutions and prepare them for debate.

What is expected of the participants?

Chosen students must attend a weekly after-school meeting of MUN where they will be guided by the MUN Director and former MUN participants. Delegates must meet all deadlines and be able to organize themselves accordingly. Ability to work in a team is essential.
