Mathematics and the MAIS Conference
In the last two years, The American School of Las Palmas teachers have participated in intensive training sessions in math workshops at the annual MAIS Conference (Mediterranean Association of International Schools). The goals have been to deepen the pedagogy and content in mathematics as well as to build the school capacity for continuous improvement in mathematics.
The math specialist Erma Anderson provided intensive training and supported teachers understanding how students learn and how they can work with peers in a mentoring relationship. The teachers also explored mathematical concepts, analyzed assessment, student work and read some of the current research. The idea is to train teachers at The American School of Las Palmas so that these ideas can be implemented at The American School of Las Palmas in the following months.
MAIS was formed in 1981 and The American School of Las Palmas is the only member from the Canary Islands to form part of this important organization. The goal of MAIS is to improve the quality of education in international schools. In November of 2017, the conference will be held in Valencia and The American School of Las Palmas will be there once more.
